2009 Taxpayers Def Conference

 

Session One: Examining the IRS’s 2009-2013 Strategic Plan. We analyzed and evaluated the IRS’s latest administrative and enforcement plans for the next five years. This gives you a clear look into the future of tax collection that you simply cannot be without.

 

Session Two: The Effective Tax Administration OIC. We examined the least understood and utilized aspect of tax debt settlement, and that’s the Effective Tax Administration OIC. We looked at sample cases that might justify submission of this OIC and exactly how to prove your case.

 

Session Three: Partial Pay Installment Agreements. Another little used tool of tax debt negotiation is the “partial pay installment agreement.” Under this agreement, a citizen makes a fixed payment for a stated period and the balance of tax owed is abated. Our discussion shows exactly how to achieve a partial payment agreement.

 

Session Four: Deducting Theft Losses. Here we address the issue of the theft loss in light of rash of recent investment thefts carried out through Ponzi schemes, such as the Bernie Madoff scheme. We analyze recent IRS guidance on the topic as well as the case law and regulations regarding claiming and proving the deduction.

 

Session Five: The Innocent Spouse Defense. We analyzed all three elements of the innocent spouse defense, including key recent decisions of the United States Tax Court granting broader rights in the area of the innocent spouse.

 

Session Six: Limited Liability Companies and “Check the Box” Rules. This session presents information critical to every small business and to every tax pro advising small businesses that operate as an LLC the so-called “check the box” rules have an important bearing on the IRS’s collection rights and your rights and protections.
